Autumn Updates

Oh Hi Autumn. I’m always initially reluctant when Autumn comes around but it doesn’t take me long to get on board. I LOVE the darker evenings, they are just perfect for cosy nights in consisting of home cooked comfort food (ideally cooked for me) lighting all the candles and snuggling up under blankets to watch films. I definitely go into full on hibernation mode! I’ve been on a mission to cosy up the house, especially the open plan area as the pale blue tones and pastel shades can feel a little cold. Now, I know, typical Autumn colours are rich reds and oranges but I’m not quite ready to leave the pink shades behind! Instead, I’ll be accenting with mulberry, aubergine and deep plum colours. These colours will add the rich warmth I’m after while working with what I have already, meaning I can swap / add in a few bits without having to replace everything. Think luxurious velvet cushions, chunky knit throws and beautiful dried flowers. A little bit of GORGEOUS colour inspo below ...

TEXTILES | First on the shopping list is cushions and throws … obviously. These are essential for cosying up and staying warm! H&M is always my go to for cushions, they have a huge range in all the colours and tend to be well priced. Perfect for seasonal change ups. Some online finds linked below (click on the image to open link)

FLOWERS | Flowers are the perfect update for seasonal décor. I try to always have fresh flowers in the house (I buy them myself now – hint husband!) However at the moment I am swapping fresh for dried! I am in totally in LOVE with the current trend for dried flowers and they are just ideal for Autumn. Plus they are long lasting … which will undoubtably save me a few pennies! To care for your dried flowers simply keep them out of direct sunlight and moisture. If they get dusty, carefully use your hair dryer on the lowest heat setting. Some of my favourite dried and artificial are linked below.

CANDLES | Candles are ESSENTIAL for autumnal nights for two reasons … 1. The soft light creates a lovely cosy atmosphere and 2. Scent, I love rich indulgent autumn scents of mulberry and fig, pomegranate, blackberry. To make the most of your candles, make sure you keep the wick trimmed to 3-5mm (including the first burn) This reduces the smoking and therefore reduces the black soot that builds up on the container. To get an even burn across the whole of the candle, make sure that the first time you light the candle you allow it to burn until the top is completely melted. This is soooo important as the first burn creates a memory pool, so if you only burn for a short time the memory pool will be small and you’ll get that tunnel burn where the wax around the edge doesn’t melt. To maximise the scent, burn your candle for a maximum of 3-4 hours at time, this stops the wax becoming too hot. Allow the wax to completely cool and re-set before re-lighting. I’ve popped some of my favourite candles below (I’ve tried a lot! – Big candle fan here!)

STYLING | Autumnal colours can also be added with styling. When picking out accessories, I tend to keep to a couple of tonal colours and mix with a metallic. Gold or Copper is ideal for Autumn warmth. I select items that have a range of textures and patterns, I also try to pick a mix of shapes and sizes, this adds interest without being too overpowering. I am obsessed with coloured glass at the moment especially when textured, it works really well when styled alongside pretty candles and fairy lights as the light creates beautiful reflections in the glass.
